Farnborough “the party is officially over” for expensive defense products

Stephen Trimble over at “the Dew Line” had this interesting post today discussing the lack of new aircraft at the Farnborough Airshow.  Stephen is right on as usual – the “party is over” for defense manufacturers who have been selling $100 million fighters and high priced defense products.  Governments and military leaders are looking hard for defense products and services that deliver state of the art capabilities at competitive prices.
All the more reason that the Air Tractor will be noticed this year, not as a novelty, but as a cost-effective platform that can slash acquisition and operating costs while providing unique capabilities to remote and austere locations.
If you’re a defense industry executive or spokesperson, the party is officially over. For the first time in a decade, put on the glum look. If yours is rusty, look up at the gloomy British skies above Farnborough for reference.

I have a feeling it’s going to be that kind of a show. Lockheed Martin’s participation has been slashed in half, which apparently includes the budget for the (sad face) company’s media dinner. Honeywell has no corporate presence at all, although that decision was made in 2008. There’s a “new reality” in the global defense market these days, as Lockheed CEO Robert Stevens says, and it suits the prevailing British weather like a matching pocket square.

Look us up on the flight line at Farnborough.  We won’t be hosting a champagne brunch or a ritzy dinner, but there certainly won’t be a glum mood at the Air Tractor 802U!
